The rapper there were “a lot of songs” that didn’t make it onto the album.
Kendrick Lamar appeared on Los Angeles’ Power 106 to talk about his new album To Pimp A Butterfly where he was asked if there were any verse he loved that didn’t make it the final cut of the album. Though Kendrick mentions that happened with “a lot of songs” he did comment on one specific song produced by Terrace Martin and Sounwave that featured a verse he cut for being “too brutal”. He explained the verse was inspired by thinking about the transition from being a kid in Compton to “being inside an afterparty where politics — industry politics — people pulling you this way …”.
He raps a few lines, but stops and says that what comes after is too brutal to say. When pressed if it was because he as taking a shot at someone, he responded by saying it was nothing like that, “It’s not a shot, it’s just something I don’t want to put on record, it’s something that’s just for me.” Considering the multitude of brilliant bars on To Pimp A Butterfly, we’re happy to respect that.
