The makers of a forthcoming Amy Winehouse documentary have unveiled the official trailer.
Amy will be released in the UK on July 3 and has just been snapped up for distribution in the US, though there’s no release date Stateside yet.
Amy tells the story of the late singer in her own words, using extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, as Deadline reports. The documentary was produced by James Gay-Rees and directed by Asif Kapadia, who previously directed Senna, the eye-opening documentary about race driver Ayrton Senna, and the Banksy movie Exit Through The Gift Shop.
Kapadia and Gay-Rees described the project as “an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few films can … As a society we celebrated [Winehouse’s] huge success but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us.” Winehouse died in 2011.
