For an afternoon’s worth of screwy dub ambience, look no further than this genius YouTube playlist.
Duppy Gun’s Visual Version Excursion is a feature-length “visual dub” in 26 parts, an impressionistic documentary-slash-music video that follows the collaboration between the Duppy Gun producers and a host of vocalists in Portmore, Jamaica.
Duppy Gun Productions, for the uninitiated, is a dub and dancehall obsessed label founded and operated by Cameron Stallones (aka Sun Araw) and M. Geddes Gengras, producing and curating riddims from a network of Duppy Gun producers including Peaking Lights and Matthewdavid by bringing them out to Jamaica to collaborate with vocalists “wherever they find talent and an electrical outlet”.
The YouTube playlist features a ton of Duppy Gun’s warped and warbling takes on dancehall, collaged with outtakes and behind-the-scenes moments from their journeys. Plus industrial amounts of weed. Duppy Gun Productions Vol. 1: Multiply came out on Stones Throw last year featuring I Jahbar, Dayone and more.
