Activision details the rumored revival of the once-popular music game.

Guitar Hero Live is the first entry in the series in five years. Released by Activision and developed by FreeStyleGames (the designers of DJ Hero), the game promises the familiarity of the old games along with a new first-person point of view and a 24-hour music video network called GHTV. Activision calls GHTV “the world’s first playable music video network” and it will allow online players to challenge each other as they play along with official videos.

The switch from a third-person to first-person point of view is intended to mimic real-life performance; the game monitors where a player is in relation to the crowd and the other musicians and responds accordingly. In addition, the new guitar [below] features two parallel rows of three buttons, allowing players to mimic real chords.

A press release promises “hundreds” of songs by artists such as the Rolling Stones, Green Day, the Black Keys, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. Unlike previous editions, new songs will be added automatically rather than via expansion packs.

Rolling Stone reports that more information will be revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. The game will be available on PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and — for the first time — mobile devices.
