Amy will receive a special midnight screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Asif Kapadia’s documentary tells the story of Amy Winehouse in her own words, using extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks from the late singer. Organisers of the Cannes Film Festival have announced that the documentary will be screened at midnight alongside a “musical accompaniment” from her record label, Universal.
Director Asif Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees described the project as “an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few films can … As a society we celebrated [Winehouse’s] huge success but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us.”
Amy will be released in the UK on July 3 and was recently snapped up for distribution in the US, though there’s no word of a North American release date just yet. You can watch the trailer below.
