So, is she or isn’t she?
Late last week, the Athens Voice claimed that the subject of Pulp’s 1995 single ‘Common People’ was Danae Stratou, the daughter of industrialist Phaidon Stratos and sculptor Helen Potagas-Stratos who is currently married to Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis. Another Greek journalist, Yiannis Baboulias, then claimed that this couldn’t be true:
#MYTHBUSTING: No, #Varoufakis‘ wife cannot be the girl from “Common People”. She graduated June 1988, Cocker enrolled September same year.

In an interview with the BBC, Varoufakis has responded to the rumours – but he’s not giving too much away. “Well, I wouldn’t have known her back then”, he says. “But I do know that she was the only Greek student of sculpture at St Martin’s College at that time. And, from personal experience, she is a very fascinating person.”
Stratou is yet to comment, as is Cocker (though he did say that the song’s subject didn’t necessarily take sculpture in a past BBC Three documentary). In 2012, a Cypriot artist, Katerina Kana, claimed that she was the subject of the song.
