The Brooklyn talent steps up for Driftless.

Al Carlson is a studio engineer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Autre Ne Veut, Tim Hecker, Ariel Pink, Ford & Lopatin and many more. Next month, he’ll make his solo debut (under his last name) with Never Easy Never Been Easier. The album is a 40-minute continuous set that — while tracked in his Greenpoint studio — was initially constructed while working in Nicaragua.

“The sonic palette for this album was created during a surf/recording project I recently had the chance to work on,” he writes. “Every day there was a smooth-boogie / jazzy house party going on at the beach where we surfed.”

“Spending about two weeks there, surfing daily, I got those tones in my head. So I would spend nights in our cabana actually sequencing beats I was hearing all day. At the end of the trip I had hours of free form beats and grooves.”

Some of those beats and grooves are apparent on ‘2’, the album’s jagged, electro-tinged lead single; stream it below. Never Easy Never Been Easier is due out via Driftless Recordings on June 23 as a digital and cassette release.
