New Jersey State Police used tear gas to try to disperse crowds at the Hot 97 Summer Jam on Sunday night.
Clashes broke out between police and fans who were trying to get in to the sold-out concert at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford by climbing over fences and forcing their way through security. Videos and photos posted on social media showed fights between concertgoers and police in riot gear.
An armored state police vehicle set off a piercing loud noise to try to disperse the crowd and police later deployed tear gas on the crowd after being pelted with bottles. According to Breaking 911, at least one New Jersey state trooper was injured.
Emmis New York, which owns Hot 97, said in a statement that refunds will be offered for ticket holders whose tickets were not scanned. “When fans realized tickets were not available at the box office, a small number of people created an unsafe environment, and for the safety of all guests, the New Jersey State Police were on scene to disperse the crowd,” a spokesperson added.
The annual concert was headlined on Sunday by Kendrick Lamar, Trey Songz, Big Sean and Chris Brown. [via Huffington Post/Complex]
