The rapper headed to a New Jersey high school and listened to students read poetry and rap.

Kendrick Lamar visited New Jersey’s High Tech High School, following the news that a teacher had begun teaching his new album To Pimp A Butterfly in order to help students understand Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye.

The class later received a visit from Lamar who learned about it after teacher Brian Mooney’s lesson plan went viral. He spoke to and participated in the class as a select group of students read poetry and performed raps they’d written. Following that he joined a panel held in front of the entire student body and finished his visit by taking a single song request: ‘Alright’.

Watch a clip of the performance below and read the full story over on the New York Times.
