Legendary composer Ennio Morricone is set to return to westerns after 40 years.

Quentin Tarantino revealed at today’s Comic Con that Morricone would be scoring his eighth film, The Hateful 8. Morricone cut his teeth scoring westerns, including classics made by his old school friend Sergio Leone, including A Fistful of Dollars and Once Upon A Time in the West, but he hasn’t scored one of the genre films for 40 years.

Tarantino is a notorious fan of the Italian composer, he’s used Morricone’s compositions in Kill Bill, Death Proof and more recently Django Unchained, which caused Morricone to note that Tarantino “places music in his films without coherence.” Since then, they have clearly patched up their differences – Tarantino used a clip of Morricone’s score for John Carpenter’s The Thing when he teased The Hateful 8 with a 7-minute snippet earlier in the day, before revealing that Morricone has signed on to write an original score.

The film is set for a special 70mm release at select cinemas on Christmas day, before getting a wider release on January 8.
