Designers from the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design have created a drum machine powered by ping pong balls.

Their Haptic Hang Drum is an experimental instrument that uses servo motors, motorised sliders and Hall effect sliders to generate its sound, which is based upon samples from Ableton Live.

According to designers Dhruv Saxena, Ciarán Duffy, and John Ferreira, “the motorized sliders simulate the pressure mounting in the spring. When the pressure breaks, the ping pong ball is fired and it strikes one of eight hall effect sensors in the hang drum.”
