The first clip of Don Cheadle as Miles Davis has emerged.

Miles Ahead, which is also Cheadle’s directorial debut, will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sunday.

The crowdfunded film is set in the late 1970s and finds a reclusive Davis reflecting on his career and his failed marriage to Frances Taylor (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi), while Ewan McGregor also stars a reporter who tries to help him recover his stolen music.

As the clip demonstrates, Cheadle did indeed learn to play the trumpet for the role. “I want to tell a hot story that’s full of his music that feels impressionistic in that it finds a way to incorporate all his musical styles and influences and ideas,” says Cheadle. “It needs to feel like his approach: ‘I don’t care about what happened before. I’m about what’s happening now and about what’s happening next.’ That’s Miles’ marching orders to me.” [via EW]
