The Week’s Best Videos: Refugee journeys, dolphin overload and close-up Miley

Welcome to FACT’s weekly video round-up.

As we note at the end of every year, music videos have never been better. But too often, music videos — along with documentaries, live sets and interview clips — get lost in the shuffle of news and new music.

With that in mind, FACT is doing what it does for mixes, mixtapes, vinyl and more: rounding up the internet’s best videos on a weekly basis. And to remove our bias, we won’t be including our own content — you’ll have to stay tuned to FACT TV for all your Against The Clock, FACT Freestyles and Confessions needs.

M.I.A.
‘Borders’
Dir: M.I.A.

The queen of consciousness-raising and controversy-baiting self-directed videos returns with a not-so-subtle take on the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis, and you know what? At times like these we don’t need subtlety. As a side note, Channel 4 News recently created an amazing interactive website that lets you follow the route of thousands of migrants who applied for asylum in Europe in 2015, who have collectively travelled more than two billion miles.

Tame Impala
‘The Less I Know The Better’
Dir: CANADA

Another brilliant video from a top album, ‘The Less I Know The Better’ is like a confused dream that’s part angsty high school movie, part King Kong sex fantasy, and wholly surreal.

Miley Cyrus
‘Lighter’
Dir: Miley Cyrus & Wayne Coyne

Miley gets intimate (as ever) in the video for this 80s-tastic Dead Petz cut, which overlays Jen Starks’ “bad ass animated kaleidoscopic projections” over close-ups of the increasingly-experimental pop star.

Not Waving
‘Get Serious’
Dir: Sean Rogg

The track title hints at what’s going on here, with director Sean Rogg and musician Alessio Natalizia (aka Banjo Or Freakout/WALLS/Not Waving) rounding up a who’s who of Diagonal Records family and friends and challenging them to keep a straight face in front of the camera. Russell Haswell, Bill Kouligas and Powell are just a few of the characters in the vid – answers on a postcard.

Santigold
‘Who Be Lovin’ Me’
Dir: Trouble Andrew and Santigold

After a long time away, Santigold is coming back with a new album. This video was shot at Made In America festival in Philadelphia this year, with cameos from Earl Sweatshirt, De La Soul, Meek Mill, Vic Mensa and more.

Rustie
‘First Mythz’
Dir: Daniel Swan

Daniel Swan has made a lot of great videos for the likes of Jam City, RL Grime and Life Sim, mashing retrofuturist aesthetics with a hint of savvy detachment from his source material, and for the most aquacrunk track on Rustie’s ace new album, he’s taken his signature style and enhanced it tenfold with the addition of dolphins. Loads of them.

CL
‘Hello Bitches’
Dir: Parris Goebel

Looking past the potentially offensive aspects of this video by K-pop star and 2NE1 member CL, there is no denying that this is one of helluva piece of choreography by Parris Goebel and her ReQuest Dance Crew. Feeling kinda tired just watching them, tbh.

Rome Fortune
‘Dance’
Dir: GOLDRUSH

Rome Fortune makes a play for the middle of the floor with this ever-so-slightly-cheesy party season heater produced by KAYTRANADA, but he’s having the time of his life out there! Beware the floating turquoise beard attaching itself to passing ladies.

Fabolous
‘The Plug’
Dir: Gerard Victor

Rap’s obsession with Colombia is at an all-time high right now thanks to the latest must-watch Netflix series, so our anti-hero Fablo Freshcobar (very good) heads to Medellín to see what life’s like on the ground in the world’s biggest cocaine producer. More importantly: ACTUAL HIPPOS. A kilo of hippos is cooler than a kilo of anything else.

Goon des Garcons
‘L A W W D’
Dir: Goon Des Garcons

Because not enough rap videos are filmed in the woods. (But not many rappers are from Little Rock, Arkansas, either.)
