The veteran droners enlist members of Big Star, LCD Soundsystem and more on their first album in five years.
Cloudland Canyon, the drone project lead by Kip Uhlhorn, will return next year with An Arabesque. The record is their first album since 2010’s Fin Eaves and everything about it gives the impression that Uhlhorn is making up for the delay in a big way.
Arabesque shifts their krauty drones into something lighter, but no less hypnotic. The title track, which you can stream below, makes that clear from its brittle electronic pulse to the cooling disco dive of a climax. If it’s not immediately obvious from ‘An Arabesque”s lush ‘Big City’-bliss, this album was co-produced by Pete ‘Sonic Boom’ Kember, who has worked wonders earlier this year with Panda Bear and is just one of many impressive musicians present here.
It also features contributions from Lesa Alridge and Jody Stephens of Big Star, as well as fellow Chilton-acolyte Ross Johnson, M. Geddes Gengras, David Scott Stone (of LCD Soundsystem), Kliph Scurlock (ex-Flaming Lips), Ezra Buchla. The album is due out February 5 next year via Medical.
