Well we’ve all heard that one before.
Every M83 album has been preceded by an article saying that this time one-man-band Anthony Gonzalez has reached a new level of “epic” — but the thing is, he always seems to justify it. That was certainly the case with his last album, the colossal double-LP Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which channeled Mellon Collie-era Smashing Pumpkins through neon synth-pop and post-rock majesty. It’s been four long years since Dreaming, though, but Gonzalez has announced he’s finally done with the follow-up, and yes, it’s going to be “epic”.
The news came out on Twitter via M83 collaborator Justin Meldal-Johnsen, but was later confirmed by Gonzalez in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He describes the new album as more fun and fresh than Hurry Up, with a narrative thread running through that was influenced by 80s TV shows such as Who’s The Boss and Punky Brewster.
“I feel like TV shows are starting to sound and look the same. There’s no more passion anymore. So this album is a tribute to those old-fashioned shows,” he said. Later he revealed that long time M83 singer Morgan Kibby is not on the album due to focusing on her solo album, but the album will feature many “unexpected guests”.
