Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey has died aged 67.

Frey formed the Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. The group became one of the most successful bands of the decade, defining the radio-friendly, classic rock sound of the era.

The guitarist co-wrote the Eagles’ 1976 hit ‘Hotel California’ with Henley and Don Felder, and wrote ‘Take It Easy’ with Jackson Browne. He also composed several of the band’s biggest songs, including ‘Heartache Tonight’ and ‘Lyin’ Eyes’.

The Eagles sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, while in the US they scored five number one singles and four number one albums, and their greatest hits album sold 30 million copies.

Frey died in New York City on Monday from complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia. [via BBC News]
