Old school rap outfit The Sequence claim their vintage single was copied.
Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson have been accused of stealing the hook for their monster hit ‘Uptown Funk’, which just won a Grammy for Record of the Year.
Sugar Hill-signed girl group The Sequence claim that Mars and Ronson took elements from their 1979 track ‘Funk You Up’, one of the first rap hits. According to TMZ, band members Angie Stone, Cheryl the Pearl and Blondy haven’t filed a lawsuit yet, but there are “rumblings”.
Compare the two tracks below – we’re not convinced we can hear a similarity. Ronson and Mars have already added The Gap Band to the song’s credits, acknowledging that they used elements of their 1979 track ‘Oops Up Side Your Head’.
But we spent a whole year laughing at the idea that ‘Blurred Lines’ and ‘Got To Give It Up’ were the same, and then Pharrell and Robin Thicke had to pay $7.4 million to Marvin Gaye’s family, so weirder things have happened in a courtroom.
