“My spirit sides with the feminine.”

ANOHNI was a guest on French nightly news and talk show Le Grand Journal yesterday (March 8) where she discussed gender, identity and some of the principles powering her work.

“I’m a transgender person. I’ve always been transgender and I always will be. My spirit sides with the feminine,” she told the interviewer, via a French translator.

“I never really changed my identity. I’ve always been myself and I’ve always been very vocal about it. Recently I have adopted a different name, just in the way that if you got married you would change your name.”

Speaking about her climate change-themed single ‘4 Degrees’, which was produced by Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never, she said: “I’m interested in different concerns that surround us in contemporary society. I’m interested in misogyny and the subjugation of women and the subjugation of the earth.”

When ANOHNI was asked by the interviewer what she thought of International Women’s Day, she replied: “It means we have 364 days more still to work on.”

The artist formerly known as Antony Hegarty is currently prepping a new record with HudMo and OPN. UK fans will have their first chance to hear material from Hopelessness, which deals with themes of surveillance, drone warfare, and ecocide, at the Barbican in July.

Last month ANOHNI discussed identity politics in an essay explaining why she decided not to attend the Oscar ceremony.
