The man behind some of your favourite hip-hop samples passed away in his sleep.
Leon Haywood, the R&B singer famously sampled by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on ‘Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang’, died in his sleep on Tuesday at his Los Angeles home. He was 74.
Haywood’s 1975 single ‘I Want’a Do Something Freaky to You’, as well as appearing on the Snoop and Dre hit, was also sampled by Aaliyah (‘I Gotcha Back’), 50 Cent (‘Corner Bodega’) and Redman (‘Rockafella’).
The Texan-born singer’s other memorable tracks included ‘It’s Got to Be Mellow,’ ‘Keep It in the Family’ and ‘Don’t Push It Don’t Force It.’ His last album, Freaky Man, was released in 1994.
