The South London singer delivers another warped soul sugar-rush.
You can tell a lot about a musician by the company they keep. In the case of rising funk futurist Jodie Abacus, that’s been Julio Bashmore, piano troubadour Tobias Jesso Jnr and R&B sensitive-type How To Dress Well of late, with Duke Dumont, Beyonce producer Ariel Rechtshaid and Kendrick collaborator Rahki also stopping in on studio sessions. Working on his debut album after a string of intensely danceable, cult acclaimed singles, it makes sense he’d be working with a varied bunch: his sound so far, from early track ‘I’ll Be That Friend’ to the Frank Ocean-on-a-bar-crawl vibes of December single ‘Hot Kitchen’, has hinted at a man of immensely eclectic tastes.
New track ‘She’s In Love With The Weekend’ is no different, refracting funk and soul influences in a colourful disco-ball-shimmer. “The song was written about someone that I like who is a party girl, but she really has no “off-switch”… she’s in Miami mode all the time,” says Abacus. “It’s kind of a sad song truly – I like her, but I’m concerned for her because she’s addicted to partying, and I don’t know where she’ll end up.”
Co-written with producer FRED, the single’s released on May 20 via Household Records. Check it out below, and catch him on tour with Jamie Woon throughout April.
