The BEYONCE of festivals?
Lauryn Hill is throwing a surprise Tidal-sponsored music festival at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre this week, it was announced last night (April 13). Diaspora Calling! is a three-day charity event focusing on “various forms of visual art, and featuring performances by artists from Africa, and throughout the African diaspora”, and runs till April 15.
Hill will perform at the event alongside other performers including Machel Montano, Stephen “Ragga” Marley and Stonebwoy, with DJ sets by DJ Spinna, DJ Juls, and more. Friday’s final day at the festival – presumably when Hill will take to the stage – is to be live-streamed for free on Tidal.
“Diaspora Calling! is a collection of works intended to celebrate the rich tapestry of artists from the African Diaspora while also illumining persistent and irrepressible themes,” said Hill in a statement. “Even if we work independently, we are a resounding collective voice, both reconciling and embracing our relationship to history, our origins, our future and to ourselves.”
