The singer calls the upcoming album his Paul’s Boutique.

Blood Orange, the current project of songwriter Dev Hynes, will release its new album this spring. Titled Freetown Sound, the album follows 2013’s Cupid Deluxe and is inspired by the cut-and-paste aesthetic of the Dust Brothers’ work with the Beastie Boys.

“It’s like my version of Paul’s Boutique. It kind of plays like a long mix tape,” he tells V Magazine describing it as an extremely layered record both sonically and thematically.

In the interview Hynes calls the record “very personal”, but also the most relatable thing he’s done, tying together themes ranging from Christianity to sexuality to displacement to life in the city. The title refers to Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, where Hynes’ father is from.

“The record addresses the way Christianity was brought to West Africa and the way black households held on very tightly to Christianity because it was this beacon of hope…and how eventually this somehow led to someone in a school telling me not to use my left hand,” he says.

No release date is available yet, but we can expect the album in the next few months. Since Cupid Deluxe, Hynes scored the film Palo Alto and releases stand alone tracks including ‘Sandra’s Smile’ and ‘Do You See My Skin Through the Flames?’
