Last King of Scotland director Kevin Macdonald and Searching for Sugar Man producer Simon Chinn are working on a new Whitney Houston documentary, reports Billboard.

Macdonald – who also directed climbing documentary Touching the Void and Bob Marley biopic Marley
– said the “unvarnished and authentic” story will “examine both the highs and lows of her dramatic career.”

According to Macdonald, the film will map Houston’s life, from her beginnings as a gospel singer to the day of her death, and will feature three decades of her music, including exclusive demo recordings, never-before-seen performances and rare audio.

A release date has yet to be announced but Macdonald declared that the film “won’t shy away from the darker parts of Whitney’s life.” It’s being distributed by Altitude Films, the team behind Amy.

Whitney Houston died in February 2012, with the coroner confirming the official cause of death to be drowning combined with the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”

This is the reportedly the only documentary to have been officially authorised by Houston’s estate since her death. However, it was revealed last month that a BBC documentary on Houston was in the works, helmed by the filmmaker responsible for documentaries Biggie and Tupac and Kurt & Courtney, Nick Broomfield.
