Football’s not coming to Worthy Farm.
Glastonbury has announced that it won’t be screening any games from Euro 2016 during this year’s festival. Explaining the decision in a statement published on its website, the organisers said: “With this summer’s Euro 2016 tournament in France fast approaching, we have being asked about our plans for screening any matches during the Festival. With the kick-off times of the tournament potentially clashing with headline sets, the decision has been taken that no matches from the tournament will be shown at Glastonbury this year.”
They added: “We’d like to take this opportunity to wish the home nations all the best at Euro 2016, and we very much hope they will still be involved in the tournament once the Festival is over for another year.”
Football has often been screened at Glastonbury when the festival overlaps with a major football tournament. Although both England and Wales will have completed their initial matches by the time the festival begins, either team could play on Saturday June 25 if they qualify in first place from their group. Fans at Worthy Farm will also miss fixtures involving teams including the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Belgium and Portugal.
This year’s Glastonbury will pay tribute to music icons lost in the past year, with footage from David Bowie’s 2000 performance to be screened across the site and Hot Chip set to play a DJ set in honour of Prince. Disclosure, New Order, LCD Soundsystem, Grimes, Skepta and Beck are also on the bill while the festival’s dedicated dance area, Block9, will host sets from DJ Deeon, Joey Beltram, The Black Madonna and more. It was reported earlier this week that Glastonbury could move to Longleat in 2019, although Michael Eavis has admitted there are a number of logistical obstacles which would need to be overcome.
