Gunman kills himself after shooting at singer.
Christina Grimmie, a 22-year-old singer who appeared on season six of NBC’s The Voice in 2014, was shot and killed after a concert in Orlando last night while signing autographs for fans, the AP reports.
Grimmie was at a merch table signing autographs for fans when she was shot by an unidentified gunman. The singer’s brother immediately tackled the attacker who shot and killed himself in the struggle. An investigation is ongoing.
A native of New Jersey, Grimmie competed as part of Adam Levine’s team on the show after beginning her career on YouTube as a teenager where her videos of renditions of hit songs have received millions of views. In 2012, she moved to Los Angeles and joined Selena Gomez on tour.
The police have said the show was “a casual event” with only 60 to 100 people in attendance and only a few remaining when the shooting took place.
Levine, of Maroon 5, posted a photo of himself and Grimmie on Instagram before her death was confirmed and when it was still believed she might pull through.
The Voice also shared a message on Twitter in the wake of her death.
There are no words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. Our hearts go out to the friends, fans and family of @TheRealGrimmie.
