The producer’s first film will premiere at Sundance Next Fest.
Flying Lotus began this year promising it would be his most prolific and now we’re starting to see what he means. The producer revealed today on Twitter that he’s launched a film division for his label Brainfeeder and will release his directorial debut soon.
Oddly enough, FlyLo says the inspiration originally came from seeing a popular gif animation featuring a very funny conversation between Thom Yorke and himself.
In October of last year there was this pretty awesome gif going around of me and Thom Yorke djing. pic.twitter.com/l09Y48Gvhq

“I was fixated on this for a whole day and thought. Shit. I can make stuff like that,” he posted on Twitter, explaining that he enlisted David Firth (of Salad Fingers fame) to teach him animation. Firth later became the first signing to Brainfeeder’s film division.
Flying Lotus describes his first film Royal as “an awkward love story that’s definitely not for the kiddies”. It will debut at Sundance Next Fest alongside another project called The Greasy Strangler which he calls “the craziest double billing you’ll see this year”. He then shared a picture of himself in directing mode.
Last year, Flying Lotus provided the score to a short film that premiered at Sundance Next Fest titled FUCKKKYOUUU. Revisit that below.
UPDATE: As Sundance points out, Flying Lotus’s film work will be credited simply as “steve”.
