Some good news from the frontline of London’s embattled nightlife – The Coronet will stay open for another year.

The south London venue – which first opened as a theatre in 1879 – was due to close its doors on January 5 2017, despite a campaign to try and save it. However, a statement posted to The Coronet’s website today explains that it has “accepted an offer to extend the future of the Coronet for one more year.”

“2016 has been an exciting year for us, featuring many memorable live shows and club nights and showcasing our versatility as a venue,” reads the statement. “Then just as the team were preparing for the last hurrah, this reprieve has re-ignited the engines. We hope to make 2017 even bigger and better than 2016 and make it a truly fitting farewell to this magnificent building, which is filled to the brim with musical history.”

The Coronet, which has had an uncertain future in recent years due to the redevelopment in the Elephant and Castle area, announced last November that it would be forced to close.
