El-P and Pusha T are among the artists to have reacted angrily online to the fatal shootings of Keith Lamont Scott and Terence Crutcher, two black men whose separate killings at the hands of US police officers sparked massive protests in Charlotte, North Carolina last night.
43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott was shot dead in the car park of an apartment complex on Tuesday (September 20), WCNC reports. Scott, a disabled father of seven, was reportedly unarmed – witnesses say that Scott was in his car reading a book at the time of the incident. Scott’s brother has stated that the police officer in question was in plain clothes, while his sister has reiterated that the 43-year-old was unarmed.
The death of Lamont Scott follows the killing of another unarmed black man, 40-year-old pastor Terence Crutcher, who was shot dead by police in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Friday September 16. Footage released earlier this week shows Crutcher walking towards his truck with his hands up, before being shocked with a taser and then fatally shot.
Protests broke out across North Carolina last night, with police using tear gas to break up the crowd which had gathered just hours after a peaceful protest in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Charlotte demonstration left 12 police injured.
