The showcase will stop by festivals including Poland’s Unsound and Turin’s Club To Club and also features a London date.

Gqom Oh!, the Rome-based label championing the new sound of South African club music, will host a series of gigs in Europe and Asia over the coming months.

The label, which is run by Italian DJ Nan Kolè, aka Francesco Cucchi, alongside South Africa-based Lerato Phiri, launched last year and has so far released two compilations of gqom, a raw, polyrhythmic style of club music that has emerged mostly from the townships of Durban, South Africa’s second most populous city. The Sound Of Durban Vol. 1 was released in January, with a follow-up, the Woza Mixtape, dropping in July.

Kolè himself will be DJing at the autumn showcases, alongside Durban selector DJ Lag. The tour kicks off on October 21 at Unsound Festival in Krakow and takes in sets at Panorama Bar in Berlin and Stour Space in London, among many more dates. See the full list of shows below.

A documentary about gqom, titled Woza Taxi (so called for the taxi drivers who ferry revellers across Durban while pumping out dance music), landed back in July. The film, which was directed by Italian filmmaker Tommaso Cassinis, is centered around some of the scene’s leading characters, including Dominowe and DJ Mabheko. It illuminates the struggles such artists are forced to endure in order to get their music heard and respected in South Africa, despite gqom’s growing international acclaim.

The film also shines a light on gqom’s connection to drugs, specifically ecstasy, which for many is inextricably linked with the club nights and the “bhenga” dancing associated with the scene. Watch Woza Taxi below and for a deeper look at South Africa’s new generation of house, give our gvom feature some attention.
