No shiny awards for Frank this year.
Two of the year’s most talked about albums, Frank Ocean’s 45-minute visual LP Endless and his 17-track full-length Blonde, will not be eligible for the 2017 Grammys.
As Billboard reports, neither album has been submitted for consideration for the upcoming awards ceremony, even though both were released before the cutoff date of September 30 2016.
It’s not clear yet whether Ocean chose to intentionally leave Blonde out of the running, but a rep for Ocean has confirmed that it has not been submitted. The same applies to Endless, though its ineligibility is due to its unconventional format – the LP can only be streamed as a long-form video through Apple Music and is not eligible for Billboard chart status.
Endless could theoretically get nominated in a video category, but it’s unlikely that a video of someone chopping wood will be chosen over the likes of Beyoncé or Kanye.
Ocean’s previous full-length album, 2012’s channel ORANGE, earned a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
UPDATE: Ocean and his team were aware of the deadline and made a decision to not submit, according to a source speaking to Billboard. The reasons for that alleged decision are unclear as of now.
