A Tribe Called Quest have scored their first Billboard No. 1 album since 1996 with their triumphant comeback, We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. The double album sold 135,000 in equivalent album units in its first week, with 112,000 of those coming from ‘traditional’ sales – i.e. downloads and physical sales, rather than streaming – according to Billboard.
We Got It From Here… is the New York rap group’s second No. 1 album, after Beats, Rhymes and Life, which grabbed one week in the top spot in August 1996. In his review for FACT, Laurent Fintoni marveled at the defiant – and timely – triumph of the record, which recaptures the group’s urgent message at a chillingly important time..
This past weekend, the corner of Linden Boulevard and 192th Street in Queens was renamed in honor of Phife Dawg, who died in March this year. Q-Tip, Jarobi White and Phife’s friends and family were there to unveil the street sign on November 19, a day before Phife would have turned 46.
