The rapper has been labelled an “undesirable person” and won’t be allowed to return to the country.
Mos Def has finally been allowed to leave South Africa, 11 months after being arrested for trying to use a “world passport”.
The rapper also known as Yasiin Bey has lived in Cape Town since 2013, but was stopped from leaving in January and accused of overstaying his visa. Officials are letting him fly out, but he has been declared an “undesirable person” and will not be granted re-entry to South Africa, the Home Affairs Department said.
“[He] has unreservedly apologised to the Government of South Africa,” officials said in a statement. “The department is satisfied with the apology [and] will withdraw the charges against him.”
The “World Government of World Citizens” passport is issued by a non-profit organisation called World Service Authority (WSA), which has been issuing World Passports since 1954.
Many countries do not accept the passport either as a travel document or a formal identity, including South Africa. [via BBC]
