The singer has issued a statement after speculation arose online over the last few days.
R. Kelly has denied reports that he will be performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
A statement posted on Twitter this morning (January 13) called reports circulating “simply untrue.” It’s thought that the speculation emerged from jokes posted on Twitter, after an unverified dossier containing information about Trump’s ties to Russia published by Buzzfeed included allegations about “golden showers.”
The dossier, said to have been compiled by a former British intelligence official, alleges that in 2013 Trump paid Russian prostitutes to urinate on a Ritz-Carlton bed where President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama had previously stayed.
R. Kelly faced similar allegations in 2002 when a video surfaced of him allegedly having sex with and urinating on an underage girl.
Trump has had some difficulty booking acts for his inauguration ball next week. After being turned down by Moby, Charlotte Church and The X Factor UK contestant Rebecca Ferguson, the only artists he has so far managed to line up are the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, one of whom famously quit rather than perform at event, and America’s Got Talent finalist Jackie Evancho, who this week defended her decision to play as doing it “for my country. So if people are going to hate on me it’s for the wrong reason.”
