Inspired by a near-miss from a hurricane.
Experimental musician and Barn Owl member Evan Caminiti will release his new album Toxic City Music next month and today he’s shared, ‘Joaquin’, a collaborative track with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Rafael Anton Irisarri.
Inspired by Caminiti’s new home of NYC, the album finds him exploring a sound he describes as “concréte dub”. ‘Joaquin’ is named after the hurricane and was recorded when the storm was predicted to hit the city in 2015.
“It ended up missing us,” Caminiti explains over email. “I honed the track on stage during my first solo tour in Europe and continued to work on it through 2016. I was fortunate to have some electric guitar from Jefre to warp and mangle, and a little extra harmonic distortion from Raf to make everything completely fall apart at the end.”
The album is Caminiti’s first since the Thrill Jockey release Meridian. Cantu-Ledesma’s last proper album was A Year With 13 Moons on Mexican Summer, one of our very favorite albums of 2015.
