“I never felt the need to correct folks on my relationship with Apple but now that more people have tried to discredit my independence…”
In the name of transparency, Chance the Rapper has opened up about how much he was paid for releasing his Grammy-winning project Coloring Book exclusively via Apple Music.
“I never felt the need to correct folks on my relationship with Apple but now that more people have tried to discredit my independence…” he writes. “Apple gave me half a mil and a commercial to post Coloring Book exclusively on Apple Music for two weeks. That was the extent of my deal. After two weeks, it was on SoundCloud for free. I needed money and they’re good people over there.”
Chance’s relationship with Apple has called into question his status as an independent artist – it was investigated on this very site – but he has proven to be smart in his business endeavors and has remained steadfast to his hometown Chicago. Recently, the Chatham rapper donated $1M to Chicago Public Schools and has vowed to raise and donate money to individual schools through fundraising with his non-profit Social Works.

I think artist can gain a lot from the streaming wars as long as they remain in control of their own product. https://t.co/6agVO3uIdf
