Impassable Fears explores “ceremony, volume and density.”

The alchemic trio of Stephen O’Malley, Oren Ambarchi and Mayhem’s Attila Csihar are back with a new album as Gravetemple – the group’s first in four years.

Gravetemple began working on Impassable Fears, which was recorded at Orgone with Jamie Gomez, following their live performance at Tilburg’s Roadburn Festival in 2013. With Csihar’s gravelly invocations in tow, the LP continues to plough the hard-worn trio of concepts that have defined the band since their inception back in 2006 – “ceremony, volume and density.”

Out June 2, this new LP follows Ambient/Ruin, which was released on O’Malley’s Ideological Organ label – an imprint operating under the Editions Mego banner.

“The aim is to break boundaries and to find new horizons via the challenging of our own concepts of existence via the channels of musical trance,” offers Budapest-born vocalist Csihar on the group’s philosophy. “To me it is like a contemporary way of Shamanism.”

“Gravetemple is very special because here we are seeking trance while playing and recording music together. Almost like a spiritual experience.”

The three titans of metal, drone and experimentalism initially assembled back in 2006 in order to tour Israel, just as the second Lebanon War broke out. However, the band’s live shows still went ahead as planned that year, resulting in a recording which would become their first album, 2007’s The Holy Down.

In 2008 Gravetemple added Australian metal drummer Matt “Skitz” Sanders to their unit for a live European tour. The trio then played a one-off concert at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts in 2009.
