The J Hus producer steps up.
Whatever happens tomorrow at London’s Mercury Prize event, where London rapper J Hus is shortlisted for the annual British music award, he and his team can look back on a victorious breakout year. Common Sense, his debut album, dropped in May, more than living up to the hype: from the slinky ‘Plottin’ and blockbuster single ‘Did You See’ to the Rick Ross-ish strut of its title track, over the summer months that followed in the capital, you were never far from its luxury sound.
Jae5 is, alongside Hus, the man responsible for that sound. Real name Jonathan Mensah, he’s involved in 16 of the 17 tracks on Common Sense, guiding the record through an eclectic array of beats. Taking on our Against The Clock challenge, he makes it all look so easy – watch him build a gorgeous track in 10 minutes above, and listen to the finished production below.
