Fact Mix 831: Clemency

A “disorientating and frenetic” mix from the co-founder of Manchester’s Mutualism party and label.

Clemency’s music is a blend of heads-down club music and experimental sonics, a reflection of both her teenage background in improvised live electronics and her current role in Manchester’s club scene. Her debut EP, References, released on Finn’s 2 B Real label in early 2020 sounded unlike any other club record that year, drawing on a disparate range of sources to create a woozy, anxious set of percussive tracks for adventurous DJs.

Clemency’s music reflects her own DJ style, which plays loose with mood and tempo, and combines low-end frequencies with abstract rhythms. It’s a style that has been honed at some of Manchester’s best venues, including SOUP and The White Hotel, and at the Mutualism party (and label) co-founded with BFTT and Iceboy Violet. In September, Clemency released her second EP for 2 B Real, Drum Circles Against Lamentation & The Crude Foyer, featuring two atmospheric tracks that draw from both dub and the classic bleep techno of her hometown, Sheffield.

“I want this hour to encapsulate my favourite ways to play out – disorientating and frenetic, or bolschy and wobbly, and of course, the spaces in between,” Clemency says of her Fact Mix, which travels through minimalistic jungle rhythms, sludgy techno and blown-out rave from artists including Giant Swan’s Robin Stewart, Dub Across Borders and Henry Greenleaf.

“I made the mix on a rainy weeknight in Manchester, still kinda fevery from a dancefloor-induced flu the weekend before,” Clemency says. “The selections and pace are reminiscent of the late nights that came before, amalgamating two very different moments behind the decks: complex rhythms and changes of pace at my FOLD debut and more lighthearted, wiggly moments at SOUP, playing back to back with Finn.”
